subtle soothing master bedroom

Way back in September I gave you all a sneak peek of this master bedroom. But it's high time to take you on a complete tour and show you the finished product. Tradional but minimal, I love how this space turned out.

But what my client started with was not as pretty or relaxing. Dark furniture, baby blue walls, and cranberry bedding (leaving aside laundry day) feel tired and dated and make the room feel smaller than it is. So the goal was to create a grown up, sophisticated, but comfortable, relaxing and ultra subtle space, softening with fabrics and colors while bringing in just enough interest with pattern. We also wanted to stick to a budget and not buy furniture if we didn't have to.

The client gave me the go-ahead to upholster the bed. Yippee!

In process...

I covered the slats with a thin flexible board I had cut to fit at Home Depot. Then batting, then the linen.

And finally...

A new floor plan with nightstands on each bedside and matching lamps brings calming symmetry. A little shimmer in mercury glass and the series of mirrors reflect lots of light. {Please excuse those wrinkles on the footboard—they took a while to work themselves out!}

Simple panels in a two-color pattern are just enough to accent the room.

I think it's so gracious to have a chair in a master, and I try to achieve it whenever possible. There's almost always a spot for a little upholstery if you look hard enough. This slipcovered linen chair is compact, pretty, and practical.

All the light neutrals now really balance out the dark wood and complement it perfectly. And all the new fabric, including the rug underfoot, soften the room. The result: both comfortingly soothing and a breath of fresh air.

I love a neutral room. She could easily add whatever touches of color she wants if she'd like a change with the seasons. I could also see her adding a new wall color in years to come for an inexpensive update.

Looks fabulous! I love the bed and the carpet. Can you tell me where the carpet is from? I am looking for something similar for my bedroom. Thanks!

Thanks, ladies! Ashley, the chair is from a local store, but here it is so you can find it locally in Phila. http://www.rowefurniture.com/product/H961.html?start=1
Isla, the rug is from Pottery Barn. The chunky wool and jute rug and it really is chunky and it is soooo cozy and comfortable underfoot. Highly recommended in a bedroom!

What a wonderful transformation and I love how you did it on a budget! The bed really made all the difference.

I can just imagine the client walking into this room at the end of a long day and feeling so relaxed.

Casey, this is one of my favorite transformations!! Love it. Do you mind me asking where you or your client got the chair in their master?
