in praise of the small kitchen
February 11, 2014
If you don't have a huge kitchen, you probably want one. Am I right? You dream of the ease of cooking elaborate meals in it, of hanging out with your family and socializing with friends in it, of feeling connected to other rooms in the house from it. But reality is another thing. Most of us have average-sized kitchens, and a few of us have really tiny ones. I really think there's something to be said for making those small spaces work, and making them beautiful in the process. They can be more comfortable to cook in and eat in than a really huge space. They are certainly easier to keep clean. And they can be good-looking and so cozy to spend time in. I would happily take any of these spaces.

Hi Casey! Thrilled to check in and see this post from you as we are living with a small/dated kitchen as we speak. We had renovated our old kitchen and when we bought our new house I knew this would be a project for the future, so I'll have to bookmark this for future reference. I can identify with the bright, airy feeling that you see in a few of these. The one with the large mirror is really interesting, bringing more light to the space.
Love the one with the numbered baskets on top of the cupboards...pinned it too♥
Hi Casey, I love all these kitchens! Speaking of kitchens, how is yours coming along? I am currently considering a green/gray paint color for my kitchen cabinets (not too dissimilar from the last picture). It would definitely be a departure towards the all white kitchens I typically gravitate to.
Great post! These images are beautiful. I love a small kitchen (and lucky me, I have one! ;)
Lovely kitchens. Mine is modest--not tiny--with good counter and cabinet space. I sure wish it were cleaner, but that's not the kitchen's fault. :) People seem to be reconsidering how much space they really "need"--need to heat and cool, need to clean, and, of course, need to pay for. More and more are realizing that a well-designed small kitchen can be a very functional workhorse, as your examples show.
Beautiful kitchens and lovely points. We have a really small kitchen right now but it is easier to keep clean. I am sharing your post today on Weekend Reflections at Up to Date Interiors. ;)
It just beautiful
