Here's what the overall view is. It's been so nice to look at the closet since I finished that I pretty much want to keep those drapes open all the time.
The first thing I did was take everything out. Really. It's a horrendous mess, but so worth it. Go through it all ruthlessly, donating anything too big, too small, out of style, or that you're just done with. I also put off-season clothes somewhere else. So this is a fall/winter closet now only. In spring I'll have to do it all again, but that's fine. This closet isn't big enough for four seasons' worth of clothes for two people.
I also invested in some wood hangers a while back. I much prefer these, and will admit that it's for aesthetics only. Everything just looks so pulled together and classy. Makes me feel like I'm living at a Banana Republic, or something like that.
Then group like items. All my bags fit nicely on the second-to-top shelf. Up above are more bags and shoe boxes, with out of season shoes. To the right here you can see I've got belts hanging on S-hooks. This has worked really well so far. Otherwise, what do you do with them? Roll up, or get a special belt hook?
I gave away lots of shoes and really only kept what I wore often. And Michael only has like four pairs, so that works out well for me ;-) Now there's plenty of room for everything.
Sweaters and jeans/cords stacked nicely. I thought it'd be fun to group the sweaters roughly by color, and I love the way it looks. Let's see how long it stays this perfect!
I love how these bins fit so well up here, storing lots of miscellaneous personal items like extra supplies of contact solution, cotton swabs, suncreen, etc. Since we don't need to get to this stuff often, it works that it's all tucked away a bit.
Also above you can get a closeup of my curtain rail that kind of works like a hospital track, and my curtains. These are from Ikea. The bins are from Target, by Michael Graves.
And finally, one last look, because I love it so much! I'm really really going to try to keep it all this organized throughout the winter. Because it's so nice knowing what you have and being able to get to it all so easily. Have you organized your closets yet? It's a few hours of work that bring months of satisfaction!

It does look like a fancy clothing store. Great job. I like the curtain track...I need to hunt that down.
Oh Casey! I'm now inspired to clean out and organize my closet again!!! I really do this at least once a season and it makes such a difference in how stressful morning routines are. I love being able to find what I'm looking for and put outfits together easily. Great job!
Oh yeah, sometimes I feel like I actually could live at Banana Republic...
Looks great Casey!!! I've got to do that someday....
My closet really needs a revamp. I try to go through my clothes every so often - I got rid of a ton of stuff about a month ago. You know the pieces of clothing you hang onto because you know you'll need them at some point...NOT!!!! Why oh why do I do that? I know I'm not the only one, right? Enjoy your nicely organized closet - it looks great!
You've got some cute shoes, girl!!! Sigh....my closets are never going to be organized. Maura loves to go in there now and pull out random things and try them on or bring me shoes to wear that don't go with the outfit I'm wearing. Seriously though, we have a huge clutter issue in our master bedroom and someday (could be November of 2012), I will get it organized!!! Yours looks wonderful and its so cute with all of Michael's things in there too;)
Wow, I bet it you look forward to going in your closet in the morning to pick out your clothes. Looks great. My problem would be keeping it that way.
I'm impressed that you were able to get two wardrobes in your closet -- I guess that speaks to the value of a closet system. Did you put yours in? And just a comment about shoes -- men never understand why we need so many, but it's because they only need three or four pairs to go with everything!

Omg! I'm organizing my closet now and it's so much more functional. I'm in a rental so nothing fancy but we had one like 10 ft wire shelf all the way across at like 5 ft off the ground which did nothing for storage. After 2 years u finally moved the wire shelf up a few feet and added 2 hanging extention bars for pants and such for me and hubby since we share and I'm adding a tall multishelf unit in the middle for pj's and undergarments so I can get rid of a dresser that's in the way.... organization is so much fun! I've spent like $40 for everything including a shoe rack I'll be hanging since I recently went on a shoe spree lol!
